Urban Transport. The SDA has focused its attention on Urban transportation. The traffic pressure on roads has made transport services irritating for the general public. Not only that the passengers are facing heat of un-comfortable passenger service but slow movement of goods in the city is also hampering the economic growth. To improve passenger service as well as goods movement, the SDA has already taken up the implementation of Master Plan in traffic and tansport sector. Following projects are under process for implementation.
1.Regional Bus terminal; for south bound traffic at panthachowk is under completion at the cost of Rs. 494.00 lacs. The Bus Terminal at Panthachowk has been commissioned and is under the process of augmentation the additional facilities at the Bus Terminal.
2.The SDA has developed the Sumo/Taxi Stand at Batamaloo,(GBS), Boulevard near Welcome Hotel, Panthachowk and Mini Bus Stand Bemina, Soura, Harwan Mini Bus opposite Harwan Park Stand is under development.
3.To ease the pressure of goods laden trucks on the roads of Lalchowk, Magarmalbagh and surrounding areas, the Srinagar Development Authority developed a truck terminal at parimpora adjacent to Fruitmandi. All the goods and Forwartding Agencies in the Srinagar City have been shifted to the Truck Terminal, thus removing much of the inconvenience to the General Public due to the heavy truck traffic in these areas.
4.With the tremendous increase in the traffic and also due to rise in the population of small cars, the parking in the city centres has now become a greater challenge to different agencies particularly traffic police. To provide parking facilities in the city particularly in the business and economic hubs of Budshahchowk and Lalchowk and its surrounding areas, the SDA has developed parking places at Sheikhbagh lalchowk, State Motor Garages land, Sherwani Road in between SBI and Ahdoos Hotel, Poloview, Residency Road Nehru Park and near Exhibition Grounds. Bus stands known as KMD Adda apart from being developed as parking slot is also now being used as Matador Stand. The smaller matador stands which were causing much of the traffic jams and which were operating from Moulana Azad Road, Residency Road, Exchange Road and near Exhibition Ground have now been shifted to KMD Adda.
The SDA has already earmarked projects to create more parking facilities will be integrated schemes of parking/commercial activity. The Commercial activity along with parking facility has been envisaged to make projects economically viable and self sustained.
Thirteen kanals of open land at Sheikhbagh, thirteen Kanals at Residency Road where from State Motor Garage was operating and twelve kanals of KMD Adda at Lalchowk shall be state of art parking cum commercial complex.
Apart from creating new facilities the SDA is also upgrading and improving the existing facilities. Srinagar Batamaloo Adda (GBS) is being improved and upgraded at the cost of 1200.00 lacs out of which Rs.116.39 lacs are being proposed to be spent during the year 2009-2010. The renovation/up gradation improvement programme for the year 2009-2010 which include renovation of Bathrooms, provision for drinking water, repair and construction of deep drains, up gradation of part of general Bus Stand and construction/repair of surface drains, is under implementation.
